Modal wins King Abdullah II Award for Excellence 2000


The ideas was to establish a National Quality Award program that aims at enhancing competitiveness among Jordanian companies as well as promoting implementation of Total Quality Management principles and performance excellence.  The Award was named King Abdullah II Award for Excellence after his majesty's approval.  It was officially launched on 16/11/1999 in a press conference attended by senior officers form USAID, JUSBP and the local media.

Following is a brief of the Award Process:

  • Full development of Award related material in terms of Eligibility determination package, application package, examiner package, scorebooks and material needed for assessment purposes.

  • 25/6/2000 was the deadline for the submission of the application reports from eligible applicants to the Award, 49 applications were received.

  • Members of the Board of Examiners were selected to conduct the evaluation process for the submitted applications.  14 examiners were selected as examiners, and 7 as senior examiners 5 of them were from Lloyd's register quality assurance.

  • The administration body went through an intensive examiners training with VE Wayne Cassatt, and then successfully prepared and conducted a 40-hour Examiner Preparation Course for members of the board of examiners.  The course Included training on TQM, award process, award criteria, and scoring system.

The evaluation Process:

The evaluation process for the applications submitted to King Abdullah II Award for Excellence started on 8/7/2000 with the independent review, and continued till 13/8/2000, during which the applications were evaluated and scored independently by the examiners and then these scores were ranked according to the highest.  Afterward, the senior examiners conducted a meeting, in which they decided on applicants qualified to proceed to the next stage (the consensus review).

On 19/8/2000 the consensus stage of the Award program started and continued till 24/8/2000 in which the applications qualified to this stage were reviewed by the examiners and the senior examiners, and the agreed upon consensus scores were finalized.  Afterward a meeting was conducted by the senior examiners and the head of the board of examiners in which they decided on applicants qualified to proceed to the next stage (the site visit review).

The third stage;  The Site Visits Stage, started on 9/9/2000 and continued till 30/9/2000 in which applicants were site visited and then scores were adjusted according to the issues discussed during the site visit.

The final ranking of applicants and selection of Award recipients was agreed upon in a meeting conducted by senior examines, and the head of the board of examines.  The final recommendations were sent to the steering committee for final approval one-week prior the Award ceremony.

H. M. King Abdullah II handed the award to Mr. Ghassan Nuqul, MODAL's chairman in a large ceremony attended by top private, public, and media guests on 25/2/2001.
